Internationally renowned, Casas Grandes pottery is imported
from Chihuahua, Mexico. Many of these bowls come from the famous
Mata Ortiz community. They are made by descendants of the original
Casas Grandes potters from almost 1000 years ago. These bowls
are thrown, decorated, and fired in the traditional manner, using
local clay, natural pigments, human hair brushes, and are hand-formed
without a potters wheel. They are dung fired in open outdoor pits.
Most bowls are signed by the artist, and rounded bottom ones come
with stand or ring. Casas Grandes pottery stands on par
with the work of the Indian potters of the American Southwest.
Each intricate line has been hand-painted. Beautiful workmanship,
high gloss, and stone polished finishes are typical of this pottery.
